The Street

Oyster and Commoners is a walk led by historialn Iain Boal, who will engage longtime residents in conversation about life around the harbour and the fishing grounds – free and licensed – on either side of the Street. Technological change, overfishing and a globalised market have fundamentally threatened the ancient fisheries. Yet the evident failure of the neoliberal and quota-based approaches to nature’s bounty suggests that the accumulated local knowledge of the generation of fisherfolk who have worked the waters of the British Isles and who are now passing may be vital in the transition to a world beyond the privations of capital and the unhappy reign of the commodity.
