North Kent

2018 – 2022

We have been gradually expanding beyond Whitstable over the last 10 years, working along the Thames Estuary, where the River Thames slowly becomes the sea. In April 2018 we joined Arts Council England’s National Portfolio for the first time, with a remit to work from Dartford to Whitstable. In Spring 2019 we will re-launch a new name that more clearly represents everything we do, and Whitstable Biennale will become one of the projects that the new organisation presents.

Our programme over 2018 – 2022 includes

  • Estuary 2020, a major international festival for the Thames Estuary, developed in collaboration with Metal, and presented in South Essex (Metal) and North Kent (Whitstable Biennale) in September-October 2020
  • A series of artists’ residencies exploring the North Kent landscape and working with communities. Our current residency artist is Dipesh Pandya, and we’ll be announcing more over 2019.
  • Long term projects with children and young people. Current projects include We chose the earth with Webb-Ellis, and Armpit, with Ania Bas.
  • New works by artists, including Raising the Sittingbourne Barn by Kieren Reed this August, in partnership with Ideas Test (Swale and Medway).
  • The tenth Whitstable Biennale, featuring screenings, live performances, sound works, events, talks and workshops
