Assisted Power repositioned Richard Layzell’s early-career video/performance pieces within the frame of a new work. Frequently borrowing from and adopting other personas, this work, characterised by collisions and points of ‘ignition’, was curated by his fictional collaborator, Tania Kosqycz. Casting a creative and an analytical glance over his own career, in this work Layzell examined ideas about restatement, memory and the artist’s archive. As the central subject within the performance, Layzell demonstrated possible oppositions between the artist as an individual and also a public operator, questioning the point at which an artist’s impression of their work diverges with that of an audience, and how this divergence might shift over time.
