The Whitstable Biennale is a festival of contemporary visual art. It has grown out of the developing artists' community in Whitstable and celebrates Whitstable as an increasingly important centre for artists and curators. The programme focuses on artists' performances and works made for the screen, and includes ambitious new projects by renowned artists such as Anna Best, Gary Stevens and Simon Faithfull, specially commissioned for Whitstable.
Under the curatorship of Sue Jones, the Whitstable Biennale presents the work of over 50 artists. In addition to the main programme, a lively satellite programme of exhibitions and events is being organised to run in parallel with the Biennale by artists and curators living and working in Whitstable.
The last Biennale ran from 3 - 18 June 2006, with a preview evening on Friday 2 June. Each weekend a programme of events unfolded, including readings from newspapers in the Harbour, intimate performances for one under a grand piano, pop star make-overs, remote drawing and a collaborative knitting project.
Events included an Art & Comedy Symposium on Friday 9th June, and a closing event on Sunday 18th at the Whitstable Harbour boatshed.
A guide book with the full performance and events programme and maps of Whitstable are available from the Biennale HQ in Whitstable.
